So, we’ve decided – with permission from fellow bird and wildlife enthusiast Ricky Montgomery – to include the recipe right here on our Wild Bird Blog for easy reference.

We’ve also included the video of his wife Paulette making her suet from scratch, the video is included below. Now, you can follow along at your own pace.

Here’s her famous suet recipe, it’s easy to make and is popular with many birds:

Paulette’s Super Gourmet Suet Recipe


  • 2 cups Lard
  • 1 jar crunchy Peanut Butter (melted in microwave)
  • 1 cup plain Flour
  • 1 cup Yellow Cornmeal
  • 1 cup regular Oatmeal
  • 1 cup Bird Seed


Mix well, then you can add nuts, raisins, canned fruits, egg shells or whatever you want. Put in tray or cupcake pan and put into the freezer. Keep remaining suet in freezer until needed.
